Table salt is the main source of chloride. Processed foods in particular are rich in chloride (and sodium). Other sources include: numerous vegetables, seaweed, rye, tomatoes, lettuce, celery and olives.

Chloride (symbol Cl) is an electrolyte and is found in all cells and body fluids (blood and fluid surrounding the cells).

Function:

The body needs electrolytes to regulate nerve and muscle function and to maintain its water and acid-base balance. Chloride is also an essential component of the digestive juices in the stomach. It combines with hydrogen (H) to form hydrochloric acid (HCl).
