Summary:

Copper (symbol Cu) is a trace element. It is a component of many body proteins and can be found everywhere in the body. Only a small amount of copper is stored in the body (in the liver and the bones). The amount of copper in the body is therefore controlled by dietary intake.

Function:

  • Component of numerous enzymes (called cuproenzymes).
  • Acts as an antioxidant; protects cells from oxidative stress.
  • Involved in the metabolism of iron; contributes to the transport of iron in the body.
  • Contributes to the pigmentation of hair and skin.
  • Supports the normal functioning of the immune system.
